this man is chuck hagel. chuck hagel enlisted in the army in 1967. he was a sergeant in the infantry. in 1968 -- and this is an anomaly. this is not true of very many other people, if any other people at all. chuck hagel served in the same small patrol in the infantry as his brother. he was 21 at the time. his brother tom was 19. in march 1968, sergeant hagel was on patrol when he was hit by shrapnel from a mine. he still carries some of that shrapnel in his chest today. but that day in 1968, it was his younger brother tom who tore his shirt open and wrapped the bandages around chuck hagel's chest to stop the bleeding. his brother saved him. his younger brother tom had also been hit by shrapnel. they spent time recovering in a field hospital after that incident. they didn't stay in the hospital long, though, because the following month, in april 1968, the two of them were back out together. they were riding in the same armored personnel carrier when it also was hit by a mine in an ambush. quoting from the book "long time passing" here, chuck instantl

are they trying this with hagel? why is it no matter what this president nominates, they find a reason to fight it. >> i think this is the next front, you know. they didn't do so well on the fiscal cliff. now they've got to find another partisan opening. i think it's a partisan attack. i think it's designed to help them raise money to strengthen their party's position from the mainstream position of the president. >> governor, when you look at john mccane, for example, john mccain says he has concerns about hagel's positions on national security issues today. but in 2006, when he was plotting a run for the presidency, mccain said i'd be honored to have chuck with me in any capacity. he'd make a great secretary of state. same john mccain. mitch mcconnell who says there will be tough questions for hagel. >>> is john mccain just a bitter man because president obama beat him and he's just bitter and keeps attacking whatever the president does and mitch mcconnell is still trying to live up to his saying that will make him

the president wants chuck hagel to be in that position. hagel long ago proved he's got the harlt. i do recognize their tactics. they're the same ones they used to push the war in iraq. they say they don't like something he said, hagel did, 14 years ago about a gay man being put up for ambassador. i don't like it either, but, a, it was 14 years ago, and, b, i don't think it's got anything to do with why the hawks are opposing him. since when is the right wing of this country so caring for gay rights? as bill clinton would say, give me a break. and this isn't about israel's security any more than it's about ours. the right wants a hawk at defense for all occasions. someone with an itchy trigger finger who has always got a country lined up to go to war with, iraq, afghanistan, iraq again, libya, syria, iran. sorry, the guy you lined up to be president would have picked a person you'd want as defense chief, a real genuine hawk, but mitt romney lost, didn't he? he lost. so keep firing off those anti-hagel columns and editorials, my right wing brothers, and don't worry, you won't get hu
